It's one thing to put out fires, and it's entirely another to determine how they started - and in some cases, by whom. The Los Angeles Times has published a wonderful story about LAFD Arson Investigator Tom Derby. It's a terrific read - and if you're interested in the history of the department, this is a story to remember. Nice job on the article, you captured who Tom is and to some degree why. I worked around Tom for about 25 years and enjoyed his personality and respected his competence.
